This series consistently uses a very well developed science fiction world in the near future to flesh out a variety of philosophical themes. The dubbing in the dubbed version isn't very good, and should be avoided, so watch the subbed version here.

The second season, or sequel series, or whatever you want to call it, is just as good, and I see it all as one series, just with two different main story arcs.

This is the best anime series ever made. Sometimes it moves slowly. Some of the episodes deviate far from the main story arc, and aren't as good. It is the most mature and intelligent anime show I've ever seen by far, even though it still includes some humour.
